Legacy Core Redistribution Project Completed in Kochi, Japan

Following a recommendation from the IODP Science Advisory Structure for redistributing DSDP/ODP/IODP cores on a geographical basis among the 3 IODP core repositories, the Kochi Core Center (KCC) received the first shipment of the core sample residues from the Gulf Coast Repository, USA followed by a shipment of the residues, core catcher samples, and salt cores from the West Coast Repository, USA in September 2007. Since then reefer containers loaded with the cores have been received almost regularly week by week and finally on October 28th 2008, the last shipment of the cores was received at the KCC. In total, about 83 km long cores collected from various DSDP/ODP sites located in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans are being curated in the KCC. Throughout the world, IODP curation services are available from the 3 IODP core repositories located in the USA, Europe and Japan through a sample request portal site at www.iodp.org/access-data/
